Green energy production forecasting dashboard for Hydronext (BKW group)

Renewable energy: multi-API aggregation and production forecasting dashboard (wind, hydro) in just-in-time mode, to feed green energy trading.

Hydronext (groupe BKW)

Challenge

Hydronext, a subsidiary of the Swiss energy group BKW (recently acquired), needed a tool to manage the green energy production of its plants (wind, hydroelectric) in just-in-time mode. On energy markets, you have to produce as closely as possible to the forecast balance: any deviation is taxed. But the production data was scattered across several APIs, with no consolidated view and no reliable forecast, and no channel for plant managers to report outages and maintenance. This data was ultimately meant to feed the traders responsible for selling this energy on the markets.

Impact

  • Aggregation of several production APIs and weather data into a unified multi-plant dashboard (wind, hydro)
  • Anticipation of just-in-time production, a direct stake: avoiding the taxes tied to imbalances
  • Channel for plant managers to report outages and maintenance
  • Structured data to feed green energy trading on the markets
  • Product not yet deployed to production at the end of the engagement

The challenge: aggregate scattered data and forecast production

The production data lived in several separate APIs, with no consolidated view and no reliable forecast. The goal was to: aggregate it, cross-reference it with weather data, and derive production forecasts in just-in-time mode. On the ground, the plant managers needed to be able to report the state of their plants and schedule maintenance, so that we could anticipate the variations.

What was delivered

As a team of three (designer, back-end dev, and me on the front-end + business logic):

  • The entire responsive front-end of the dashboard
  • A large part of the business logic (forecasts, just-in-time)
  • A Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) on Next.js to centralize authentication across the multiple business APIs
  • The integration of the production APIs and weather data
  • Support during technical meetings

Stack & status

Next.js / React / TypeScript, BFF architecture, dataviz via Chart.js then Plotly. At the end of my engagement (7 months), the product had not yet gone into production.
